What is the Bohemian Book Club?
During 2009 I went through a job change as my company was bought out by another company. I loved my old job and was having a hard time "finding my place" in the new combined company. In true escapist fashion, I buried myself in books. I screamed through several urban fantasy and scifi series, often reading into the small hours of pre-dawn and/or over my lunch break. Then one day, quite unexpectedly, I found myself enjoying my new job and bored out of my mind with my current reads. I had scifi overload and needed to branch outside of my reading comfort zone. I set up a book club with some friends; we threw things together willie-nillie and tossed most of the rules out the window during our first meeting. We read books we wouldn't normally pick up; we research genres we've never even heard of; we eat and laugh with abandon; we make things up as we go along.
How do you chose your books?
It's a group effort. We each draw a genre out of a hat (or plastic ziplock) and research a good read from that genre before the next meeting. We then present our findings and vote on the next book. The best part about this approach is getting so many good recommendations each month; I usually end up with one or two books on my personal reading list.
Do I have to attend each club meeting?
No. If there is a month/book that does not interest you or if scheduling just doesn't work for you that month then don't stress about it. We are "free spirited" like true bohemians should be. ^_^
Do I have to attend in person?
No. Just let me know a few days in advance that you would like to attend virtually and we will set up a technology based solution that works for you. The more opinions, the better the discussions!
Do I have to bring anything to the meetings?
Just an open mind and a respect for others opinions. We usually have a potluck of book inspired foods each month just for fun, but it is not mandatory that you bring something. We seem to always have an over abundance of food. ^_^
